S2|DATA’S ROLE: Preserve Critical Mobile Evidence
TYPE OF PROJECT: Forensic Data Acquisition
OUTCOME: The result was a 1,500+ page PDF of the message thread, preserving timestamps
and key metadata.
The Business Situation
Ethical eDiscovery and S2 | DATA collaborated on a pro bono matter to help an individual securely preserve mobile phone data for potential legal use. This case demonstrates that preserving evidence does not have to come at the
expense of privacy, dignity, or peace of mind. With the right approach, individuals can protect their legal interests while remaining in control of their personal information.
The Context
An individual required urgent forensic preservation of mobile phone data, including iMessage communications relating to potential gender-based violence (such as emotional or coercive control). They were navigating a highly personal and difficult situation and needed a way to collect evidence that ensured integrity, confidentiality, and future usability, without
feeling exposed or losing control of their private information.
The Outcome
The result was a 1,500+ page PDF of the message thread, preserving timestamps and key metadata. Following confirmation of accuracy:
- All working data was securely wiped
- The individual retained sole control of the evidence
- This enabled them to:
- Maintain a reliable evidentiary record for potential legal or protective use
- Avoid more invasive processes, such as surrendering their device
- Protect their privacy
