How it works
When a client asks us to help manage legacy data, the customer typically ships backup tapes and other storage devices are to an S2|DATA location where we image the storage devices, scan the backup tapes, and export backup software databases. Metadata is extracted is processed by TRACS and ingested into the Invenire database. We then create a username and password for the client with collection names determined. Now you can quickly search the entire backup-tape pool by metadata field. Storage devices and backup tapes are typically hosted at the S2|DATA vault to enable rapid response to file extraction requests made on an ad-hoc basis.
There are three databases behind Invenire that host file-level metadata, backup session-level metadata, and mailbox level metadata (if email). The metadata is imported into Invenire in real-time as projects unfold from backup tapes scanned by TRACS or by importing directly from the backup software database. Metadata extracted can be custom created on an as-needed basis. Still, typically, file path, filename, file extension, file size, and MAC dates are imported to Invenire along with backup session names, policies, and dates. Two use cases we have found are:
When eDiscovery project managers want an immediate insight into what files are available on a set of backup tapes, perhaps to comply with a discovery request;
When a client wishes to retire a backup environment in its entirety and use Invenire as the portal to available data that was once backed up in the retired environment.
For eDiscovery requests, the presence of data can be ruled in or out from backup tapes in seconds. Legacy Data Remediation projects can be managed using Invenire to see whether backup tapes retain data for preservation quickly. Groups of tapes can be quickly and defensibly created for remediation. Legacy Backup tape environments can be retired with massive cost savings.
Libraries of metadatafrom tapes and evidence images can be added to Invenire, creating a high-speed project management portal to strategize more effectively on matters.
